Biography

Born in Jamaica, Kadian moved with her family to Washington, DC as a child. She attended American public schools and universities, earning a bachelor degree in Anthropology and a masters degree in Languages and Cultures of Asia.

While living in Washington, DC, Kadian was fortunate enough to work in community partnerships and museum education for some of America's top museums, including The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. There she specialised in connecting those museums with the communities in which they were embedded, and created lasting programmes.

After marrying and moving to Birmingham, UK, Kadian worked with a couple of West Midlands museums, art institutions and equalities organisation before transitioning to academia. It was her love of blogging about the US television show, Scandal,  that inspired her current doctoral dissertation on Black women's fandoms and the Intersectionality of TV discourse.

While re-engaged with academia, Kadian began researching and formulating her own hair and skincare products for herself. This hobby, which mostly benefited her family and close friends, turned into the brand Bourn Beautiful Naturals in 2017.

Kadian is currently a lecturer in Sociology at Birmingham City University, where she teaches courses in both Sociology and Black Studies. Her interest include:
  • Black feminism
  • Intersectionality
  • TV and Social Media
  • The sociology of Black natural hair
  • Sexuality and queer studies
